Garnet Kindervater brings more than three decades of home building experience to the Canadian housing industry. On a National level, Garnet served on the CHBA (Canadian Home Builders' Association) Executive Board in various positions from 1994 to 2001. In 1999, he served as the President of the CHBA and over the years has also served on the CHBA's Economic Research Committee, Canadian Renovators' Council and the National Education and Training Advisory Committee. He was the CHBA National Conference Host Committee Chair when it was held in St. John's for the first time in 2005.
Garnet is a building professional and trainer who works actively with industry, trades and the formal education system. He established his business in 1976 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. In the 1980's, he gained recognition for his restoration and redevelopment projects in St. John's historic downtown area. Many of the City's distinctive wood frame homes date from the early 1800's and had fallen in disrepair. He successfully restored many of these unique buildings to contemporary standards. For this work, Garnet received Southcott Awards on 11 projects from the Newfoundland Historic Trust as well as recognition from Heritage Canada.
Garnet has been a builder/renovator for more than 32 years and has earned an excellent reputation among his clients and peers. He was won many awards which are detailed under "Awards & Testimonials" recognizing his significant contribution to the building/renovation industry and for demonstrating exemplary leadership qualities.
In addition to being an active builder, Garnet worked with the College of the North Atlantic to develop and deliver training in Canadian home building techniques for Eastern European workers. This included management of an energy retrofit project in Lithuania in 1997. He is also involved with the Atlantic Home Builder Training Board and has served as an industry trainer since from 1991 to 2007. He has also been a member of CMHC's (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) International Training Team since 1999.
In 2001-2002 Garnet was active with CMHC delivering seminars on wood-frame construction and promoting Canadian Housing Systems in ten cities around China. From 2002 - 2004 Garnet has also been involved in delivering seminars and promoting trade between Iceland and Newfoundland home building industries. He was Project Manager for a Newfoundland model Super E home project in Selfoss, Iceland. This home commenced construction in October of 2004 and was completed in August of 2005 as the first Canadian Super E certified home in Iceland. This home will serve as a showcase for Super E Technology (R-2000). Garnet has also delivered a seminar on the Canadian housing system in Portland, Maine, USA in Sept. of 2005.
